Jedi Shipping and Mailing Master

Nerds of the world rejoice (myself included): The United States Postal Service unveiled their collection of 15 new 41-cent Star Wars postage stamps today at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, where the first movie opened nearly 30 years ago.

The USPS is inviting people to vote for their favorite stamp which become its own individual stamp sheet. I, of course, voted for Boba Fett.

One Step Closer to a Unified Ireland

“Go on home, British soldiers, go on home! Have you got no fucking homes of your own?”

Northern Ireland’s arch-rival leaders Ian Paisley and Gerry Adams have agreed a power-sharing deal at historic talks. The two men agreed to form a joint executive on 8 May to run the province. Their first ever direct talks were held at Stormont, the province’s parliament.

Mr Paisley, leader of the Protestant DUP, and Mr Adams of the mainly Catholic Sinn Fein, have been implacable opponents for decades.

The DUP wants to keep British rule. Sinn Fein calls for a united Ireland.

NYPD Spied Broadly Before G.O.P. Convention

We were at the RNC in 2004, I can personally attest to most of the bullshit described in the following New York Times article:

For at least a year before the 2004 Republican National Convention, teams of undercover New York City police officers traveled to cities across the country, Canada and Europe to conduct covert observations of people who planned to protest at the convention, according to police records and interviews.

From Albuquerque to Montreal, San Francisco to Miami, undercover New York police officers attended meetings of political groups, posing as sympathizers or fellow activists, the records show.

Stereolab - Dots and Loops

I just wanted to share just how obsessed with Stereolab’s 1997 studio album Dots and Loops I am right now.

Produced in Chicago by John McEntire of Tortoise and The Sea and Cake fame and partially recorded with Mouse on Mars (Tracks 3, 5 and 10), Dots and Loops was a technological achievement in melody. It solidified The Groop as the originators of Post-Rock while showcasing their Kraut roots.

It’s been 10 years since it’s release. Will you ever get tired of hearing “Diagonals”?

Ain’t It Strange? by Patti Smith

This was published in the NYTimes on March 12, 2007 as an op-ed contribution by Patti Smith. It’s fantastic:

ON a cold morning in 1955, walking to Sunday school, I was drawn to the voice of Little Richard wailing “Tutti Frutti” from the interior of a local boy’s makeshift clubhouse. So powerful was the connection that I let go of my mother’s hand.

CURRENT MOVIE
John Waters Collection

"John Waters Collection" (John Waters)

There are no words that could accurately express the love that I feel for this man. He is the queen of queer trash and poor taste.
